In the course of the project, curved glazing put special requirements onto the planning and calculation process. The wide range of glass usage, geometries, processing and finishing, causes a detailed analysis of its requirements. Thereby new methods of computer based design and analysis play an increasing greater role.
The example of the new entrance pavilion at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and generative processes were examined in a comparative analysis. The pavilions, designed by the architects Meixner Schlüter Wendt, offered by their free-form layout geometries an ideal foundation for the consideration of design processes. Beside a classic design process with different cad tools and calculation programs, a parametric process including geometry optimization and calculation combined in a single program environment, was performed.
