Facts |
The refuge is a timber-framed building located in the Pyrenees National Park on the banks of Lake Barroude. The overall dimensions of the building are approximately 70m x 28m. Thanks to the land's natural slope, each has direct access to the outside. Its radiating plan divides it naturally into two zones separated by circulation: in the centre are the living areas, including the refectory and kitchen, and on the periphery are the private areas containing the dormitories.
The service areas and winter shelter are located in the basement. The roof of the central spaces is planted to blend in with the landscape.
The refuge's design prioritises environmental sustainability using bio-sourced materials and minimising construction impact. Foundations and earthworks are designed to adapt to the land's natural slope, reducing excavation needs. The lightweight timber structure minimises the requirement for helicopter transport, while extensive prefabrication accelerates onsite construction and limits the use of heavy machinery. The building features timber framing, bio-sourced insulation, and reuse of materials from excavation and demolition for facades. These strategies aim to enhance public access while respecting the local ecosystem and wildlife.
