The students of the Berlin University of the Arts won the student competition on the theme of 'Gates of Freedom' at the World Exhibition on the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Their winning design, 'Paradise Garden,' was designed for the 'Culture' gate space.
The ecological art installation comprises two connected components, which are joined by water-filled hoses. The hanging garden is situated above compost silos that form a city and create a microclimate through the decomposition of organic material. The flower bed is heated by the compost silos and surrounded by a warm, humid mist, which supports the growth of the plants. The installation creates the poetic image of an enraptured, unreachable place. The 'Paradise Garden' results from a collaboration between the Constructive Design and Structural Design, and Sculptural and Spatial Design departments of the Architecture degree program. Bollinger+Grohmann supported the students in the competition and advised them on design issues. They were also responsible for the project's structural planning to ensure its completion.
