The Merck stadium at the Böllenfalltor was being rebuilt in a multi-stage process while ongoing operation. The stadium's stands are separated into two parts: The standing area is positioned at the front and follows the natural shape of the terrain. The seating area, located at the back of the stand, is a pre-fabricated structure that houses the grandstand staircases and sanitary facilities. Both stands are protected by a cantilevered steel roof structure.
The steel structure consists of three-chord trusses that spread out towards the cantilever in the style of the lily logo, thus creating a spatial load-bearing effect. The roof is clamped into the main girders of the prefabricated grandstand and is also braced by tension members at the rear.
