The Learning Center at JKU Campus is a study venue for university students offering diverse communicative areas where people can meet. The existing library from 1980 was extended by around 2,500 square metres above the forecourt with an atrium and a spacious staircase.
The single-storey extension significantly increases the load on the existing building, which is why the columns and core walls were upgraded. The new floor level, which lies above the roof of the existing building, is a mixed construction of a reinforced concrete ceiling with beams, a hollow plank ceiling and an in-situ concrete flat ceiling with hollow body elements. The loads from the extension are introduced directly into the existing supports and walls. In the front area, the building protrudes above the existing building, standing on 14 m high centrifugal concrete columns and an in-situ concrete wall disc which, in addition to its reinforcing effect, also supports the wide-span steel staircase. The roof is a lightweight construction made of steel beams and trapezoidal sheets.
