The fully circular museum GAIA Vesterålen in Sortland will be a landmark built with recycled concrete and discarded containers from the fishing industry in Vesterålen, Norway. The building is designed for complete circularity and to be climate neutral in both construction and operation. The importance of the sea is central to GAIA, and approx. 25 % of the building will therefore be an underwater experience.

The ambition is to build a museum in Sortland harbour with the highest recycling rate realised in large construction processes with a target of 95 %.

GAIA Vesterålen is a CIRC-BOOST pilot project, which is a 4-year project funded under the Horizon Europe programme focusing on testing and scaling up circular solutions in buildings and the construction sector. There are five such pilot projects in total, located in different European regions.
