The area control center (BLW) 2 in Frankfurt am Main is undergoing renovation to comply with preservation regulations. The existing station building will be completely renovated, and the other buildings on the site will be demolished. A new U-shaped building will be constructed on the vacated site, enclosing the existing building. The new structure will feature 12 new vehicle bays, warehouses, and workshops on the ground level, while the first floor will house a kitchen, rest rooms, changing rooms, toilets, and other ancillary rooms. Flats will be planned from the 2nd floor upwards in all new parts of the building, accessible via 6 staircases. As part of the refurbishment, the existing building, which is used jointly by the rescue station and the fire brigade, will be connected to the new building via a bridge on the 1st floor. Additionally, an underground car park is planned to extend over almost the entire building site.
The building project is designed as a solid, jointless reinforced concrete construction. Vertical load transfer occurs from the ceilings into reinforced concrete walls, core walls, load-bearing reinforced concrete wall panels, and columns on the ground floor. Horizontal load transfer primarily happens via the base-fixed staircase cores and stiffening reinforced concrete walls.
