The listed market hall ”Großmarkthalle” experienced a restoration process as part of its integration within the construction of the new ECB towers. The ”Großmarkthalle” was built in 1928 and used as a wholesale market until 2004. The market hall with its head-end buildings is being carefully restored. The restoration concept was generated in close cooperation with the heritage authorities. Various building surveys were carried out beforehand with different investigation objectives.
The building’s structure is characterized by exposed concrete in combination with elaborately designed masonry work. To ensure an adequate restoration and a maximum preservation of the original materials, damage categories have been established and related to restoration measures. For the concrete surfaces the repairs haves been planned according to the RiLi-SIB (concrete guidelines), for the masonry work both brick and joint restoration measures were planned considering the historical objectives. All measures have been tested on sample areas on site.
